Rees issues warning

A poor perception of career opportunities in science that sees the
best graduates head to the City are among the barriers to Prime Minister
Gordon Brown's vision of a thriving economy based on scientific
innovation, according to Lord Rees, president of the Royal Society. In his
annual address last week, Lord Rees also said that the world's scientific
talent and intellectual capital would become increasingly concentrated in
China and India. "This country's future is bleak unless we can compete at
the top end of the value chain," he said.
