A study of a national cross-section of more than 22,000 Brazilian medical graduates carried out by the national inter-institutional commission for the evaluation of medical teaching revealed that the graduates had acquired an average of just 51 per cent of the necessary grounding in their subject. Northwestern Brazil fared worst, with an average of 39 per cent.
