* Science minister Lord Sainsbury was this week hanging on in office despite allegations of potential conflict of interest over genetically modified food. The Guardian had to back down after saying in a front page article that Lord Sainsbury was the owner - in his blind trust - of a firm that patented the cauliflower mosaic promoter. Lord Sainsbury said the allegations were untrue, and that it was owned by the US biotechnology giant Monsanto.
But despite a backdown, allegations of conflict refused to subside.
