Scottish teachers ask for more funding

The Association of University Teachers Scotland has called on the Scottish Executive to invest more in teaching and research just as ministers are set to make a strong pitch to chancellor Gordon Brown for a formula-busting share of the Science Research Investment Fund.

Henry McLeish, Scotland's minister for enterprise and lifelong learning, is expected to argue that Scotland's share of the Pounds 1 billion fund should not be capped on the basis of the Barnett formula, determined by population. Instead, it should mark Scotland's record of carrying out about 12 per cent of UK research.
