Student leaders at St Andrews University have "regretfully" accepted a per cent rent rise, saying that important concessions have been made. The university court will vote later this month on proposals to raise the average weekly rent from ?75 to ?98. The university's planning and resources committee says the residences make an annual loss of ?550,000 because of artificially low rents, "a major and unsustainable deficit" that is taking funds away from teaching and research.
