ALISTAIR HEADLEY, lecturer in environmental science at Bradford University, was a member of the AUT until 1994, writes Julia Hinde.

"I was appalled by the way the AUT did not stand up and fight against changes put on higher education by the Conservative government. In my opinion the AUT was very weak. It has done too little, too late. You need more than a single day of protest." He added: "I don't think there are many alternative unions to join."
