The Welsh Government is seeking to appoint a new Chief Scientific Adviser for Health (CSAH) to lead the provision of high-quality, independent scientific advice across a broad range of health and care matters. This is a pivotal role within the Health, Social Care and Early Years Group, working closely with the Chief Medical Officer for Wales and other senior leaders to ensure that policy decisions are underpinned by robust scientific evidence.

The CSAH plays a key leadership role in shaping the research, development, and innovation landscape in Wales. Co-leading Health and Care Research Wales, the CSAH will champion the application of science to improve health outcomes and equity across the nation, and ensure that Wales remains at the forefront of health and care innovation, nationally and internationally.

The successful candidate will be nationally or internationally recognised in a health-related scientific discipline, with a strong track record of applied research and evidence of impact on policy or practice. This is an exceptional time to be joining the University of Southampton Information and Cyber Security team within the University’s IT department, iSolutions. The Security team is uniquely placed to advise, support, and defend the University against security threats.

About the Role

You will take a leading role in securing the Secure Data Research Environment, providing specialist expertise in information and cyber security to protect sensitive research data and ensure compliance with security standards. You will work closely with colleagues across the University to monitor and analyse security systems, respond to incidents, address vulnerabilities, and implement security measures.

You will also be responsible for supporting the University’s preparation for and maintenance of cyber security accreditations, including Cyber Essentials Plus and ISO/IEC 27001.

What you’ll do

· Work with colleagues from the University to Lead efforts for the Secure Data Research Environments Cyber Security accreditations (e.g., Cyber Essentials/Plus, ISO/IEC 27001), coordinating audits, managing documentation, and implementing remedial actions.

· Provide support in maintaining security operations by managing and updating security policies and procedures, conducting vulnerability assessments, and implementing security patches and updates.

· Oversee remediation of risks from security scans and tests, ensuring alignment with risk appetite before production. Conduct risk assessments for on-premise and cloud-hosted solutions, identifying control gaps and residual risks using frameworks (e.g., CIS Top 18, NIST Cyber Security Framework, ISO 27001).

· Lead on efforts relating to the Secure Data Research Environments Cyber Security accreditations, including Cyber Essentials/Plus and ISO/IEC 27001.

· Provide expert guidance on policies, standards, industry regulations, and best practices. Offer consultation on Secure by Design principles and information assurance. Develop IA strategies, policies, and awareness programs.

· Identify, analyse, and evaluate information risks across various projects and systems. Communicate the causes, likelihood, and impacts of information risks to stakeholders.

· Maintain awareness of evolving cyber security and regulatory landscapes to inform risk management and governance.

We are recruiting a

Doctoral Researcher

to the project ‘Targeting transcription elongation to modify the prostate cancer tumor immune micro-environment’ to the research group Transcriptional Rewiring in Cancer led by Harri Itkonen (University of Helsinki). The project is pursued in close collaboration with Professor Ian G Mills’ research group based in University of Oxford and it is funded by Prostate Cancer UK. The position is for 3 years, and we hope that the candidate starts in autumn 2025.

Background

The research in Itkonen laboratory is focused on how the information embedded in the genome is decoded through transcription, and how the defects in this process can be used as a basis for therapy. Currently, we are probing how the crosstalk between transcriptional kinases and other factors regulating RNA polymerase II activity function in normal and cancer cells. In particular, we are interested in the kinases that promote transcription elongation, CDK9 and CDK12, and highlight few examples that are particularly relevant for the current project. We discovered that CDK9 inhibition stimulates transcription of short mRNAs (Gondane & al. 2025, PMID: 40186208) and leads to excessive splicing defects (Hu & al., 2021, PMID: 34592899), which the cell interprets as a viral infection (Yalala & al. 2024, PMID: 38661032). In our projects, we make extensive use of comprehensive transcriptional profiling, including RNA-seq, SLAM-seq, alternative splicing analysis, combined with epigenetic profiling using ChIP-seq, FAIRE-seq and more recently also ATAC-seq (for examples, see Itkonen & al. 2020, PMID: 3261155; Gondane & al. 2022, PMID: 35164752,Gondane & al. 2023, PMID: 36975490, and Liang & al. 2024, PMID: 38775167).

Project

Prostate cancer is immunologically cold, which means that the body’s own immune system fails to detect and eradicate the cancer cells. We have discovered that the drug-induced defects in transcription elongation activate immunogenic signaling in prostate cancer cells. In particular, this can be achieved by inhibiting CDK9 using compounds already assessed in clinical trials against other cancers.

Our main aim in this project is to develop CDK9 inhibitor-based treatment against prostate cancer for durable response. To achieve this, we will model how both normal and cancer cells respond to CDK9 inhibition, and if the response can be augmented using immunomodulatory and / or other strategies.

The project is divided so that the organoid experiments and bioinformatics are performed in University of Helsinki, while the animal experimentation is performed in University of Oxford. The project utilizes a number of sequencing techniques including RNA-seq, SLAM-seq, scSLAM-seq, and ‘Breaks Labeling In Situ and Sequencing (BLISS)’.

The candidate

We are seeking a motivated Bioinformatics graduate who wants to expand their expertise to cancer research / molecular biology. The proposed project is intended for an MSc-level person who wishes to acquire PhD degree. PhD Trainees in my laboratory typically graduate within 3-4 years with competitive publication output, and we put great emphasis on planning the project with clear milestones set in the beginning. This strategy allows the Trainees and me to reflect on the progress and to make adjustments as need be. Project involves significant work together with collaborating groups based in Oxford (Mills) and Switzerland (Clémentine LeMagnen). The appointee will be based in Helsinki and the project includes research visit to Switzerland to acquire specific expertise required for the project execution.

Qualification requirements

The ideal candidate has an MSc degree from Bioinformatics, but applicable other degrees are also considered.

About the role

This is an exciting position?where the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work as part of an internationally leading team of researchers investigating biological bases of neuro-psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders and the mechanism of action of treatments. The team has a particular interest in investigating the mechanism of action of cannabinoids and a key component of this program of work will involve the application of cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques (such as fMRI) to investigate the neural substrates underpinning the harmful effects of recreational cannabis use as well as potential therapeutic effects of cannabinoids. As part of this role, the appointed person will be involved in ongoing or planned randomised clinical trial/s and/ or pharmacological challenge studies.

The position is ideally suited for specialty trainees (from Psychiatry/ Neurology /Geriatric Medicine) interested in developing experience and skills in clinical trials or clinical research, in addition to gaining valuable experience in neuroimaging and neuropsychopharmacology.

The successful applicant will play a key role in the assessment and monitoring of patients taking part in ongoing studies and along with a team of researchers will contribute to the collection of clinical trial and neuroimaging data. The applicant will receive appropriate training and supervision relevant to their role and will work closely with other research and clinical staff working on the project/s, fostering effective working relationships with appropriate local services (e.g., Parkinson’s clinics at King’s College Hospital and Liaison and Geriatric Psychiatry at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust). ?

The person will be based in the Department of Psychosis Studies, School of Academic Psychiatry, IoPPN at KCL and will work closely with Prof Sagnik Bhattacharyya (https://www.kcl.ac.uk/people/professor-sagnikbhattacharyya) and other investigators based at King’s College London, in particular Dr Latha Velayudhan (https://www.kcl.ac.uk/people/dr-latha-velayudhan), based in the Psychological Medicine department at King’s College London. They will also interact with clinical fellows, research assistants, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students working in the group.?

This is a full-time, fixed term post, currently funded for 12 months with potential for extension and an anticipated start from August 2025. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their own research interests.?and apply for funding to support an MD/PhD.?
