Basic information and contact details for Austin College

institution

Austin College, founded by the Presbyterian Church in 1849, is dedicated to educating undergraduate students in arts and sciences. It is situated in Texas, about 60 miles north of Dallas.

Students are expected to live on campus for the first three years of their education. The campus lifestyle is close-knit and community oriented, which allows students to flourish.

There are four residence halls on the Austin College campus. Baker Hall houses only males, Caruth Hall houses only females, and Dean and Clyce Hall are co-ed; students are required to live in one of the residence halls in their first year.

There are over 50 subjects available at Austin College such as: law, medicine, dentistry, allied health, ministry, and engineering, in addition to offering a four and a half year Masters of Arts in Teaching programme.

Austin College actively promotes study abroad programmes and some 70 per cent of graduates have at least one international study experience during their time there.

For students on campus, Austin College offers amenities like bookstores, dining services, a post office and computer labs and other technological resources.

Austin College*s Thinking Green sums up the campus* green initiatives. They offer an annual residence hall energy conservation competition, an annual GreenServe event, student-initiated greening proposals and are involved in the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment.

Interestingly, in 1998, the Jordan Family Language House was built as a residential immersion facility for students pursuing German, Spanish, French, Mandarin and Japanese language and culture. The hall is divided into four sections, one for each language with Japanese and Mandarin sharing a single wing. Students are required to speak in their language of study when in the house, which facilitates their learning.

A student newspaper is produced and written by students called, the Austin College Observer. It is a bi-weekly publication and covers a range of different subjects.

Notable alumni include Ronald "Ron" Kirk, an American politician and member of the Democratic Party, Deborah Crombie, an American author of the Duncan Kincaid / Gemma James mystery series set in the United Kingdom, and Herbert Lawrence "Larry" Fedora, an American football coach and former player.
