The School of Music at the Academy offers comprehensive full-time programmes, including Diploma, BMus, MMus, and a new doctoral degree (expected 2027), alongside its highly successful Junior Music Programme – comparable to the ‘Junior Schools’ of other world-leading conservatoires. In keeping with its conservatoire status, the School’s philosophy is centred on performance and reflects the unique cultural mix of Hong Kong, with emphasis on both Western and Chinese traditions. The School comprises the Departments of Strings, Keyboard, Voice, Woodwind/Brass/Percussion (‘WBP’), Composition, Chinese Music, Conducting and Cultural Leadership, Academic Studies and Junior Music.

Applications are now invited for the Senior Lecturer (Strings) post (i.e., violin/viola). The postholder is responsible for leading instrumental and ensemble training, programme development, and coordinating productions and events presented by the Strings Department when required. Some administrative duties, as well as performance and creative activities, will be expected. The postholder reports to the Head of Strings, who reports to the Dean of Music.

Applicants should have:

(a)? ?A recognised degree in Music or equivalent qualification in violin/viola performance (preferably a doctoral degree in Strings performance or relevant disciplines).
(b)? ?A strong professional background and extensive professional experience as a performer and an educator.
(c)? ?In-depth knowledge of current Strings area trends, pedagogical approaches, and performance practices in Strings music, including solo performance, chamber music, orchestra, early music, contemporary music, and cross-disciplinary collaborations, ensuring the School remains at the forefront of creative and educational excellence.
(d)? ?Internationally recognised standing and good industry network.
(e)? ?An excellent teaching record in conservatoire/university contexts across undergraduate, postgraduate, and pre-college music programmes.
(f)? ? The ability to advise and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, and experience in carrying out practice as research.
(g)? ?Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills.
(h)? ?A good command of both written and spoken English. Fluency in Chinese (including Putonghua and Cantonese) is an advantage.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT 

Appointment will be on a two-year renewable contract, subject to performance and mutual agreement.? A gratuity payment equals up to 15% of the total basic salary earned during the contract period may be granted upon satisfactory completion of the full contract period.? The amount of gratuity payable will be the sum which, when added to the Academy’s contribution to a Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) scheme as required by the MPF Schemes Ordinance, equals 15% of the total basic salary drawn during the contract period.?? Fringe benefits include leave, medical, and dental benefits.? Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.? Non-accountable Cash Allowance will be provided to the eligible appointee. The expected commencement date will be 1 September 2025.? The current standard rate of income tax in Hong Kong is 15%.

The Role 

The identification of carbon dioxide-binding proteins

Carbon dioxide is essential for life. It is at the beginning of every life process as a fundamental substrate of photosynthesis or chemosynthesis and is at the end of every life process as the product of aerobic respiration and post-mortem decay. As such, it is not a surprise that this gas regulates such diverse processes as cellular chemical reactions, transport, maintenance of the cellular environment, behaviour and immunity. Carbon dioxide is a strategically important research target with relevance to crop responses to environmental change, insect-borne disease and public health. However, we know very little of the direct interactions of carbon dioxide with the cell, despite the importance of the gas to biology.

Carbon dioxide mediates the earliest known example of a protein post-translational modification (PTM), identified on haemoglobin in 1928. Carbon dioxide can directly combine with select protein groups to form carbamates. Influential research programmes from the 1920-80's demonstrated that the carbamate PTM regulates oxygen-binding in haemoglobin and activates the carbon dioxide-fixing enzyme Rubisco. George Lorimer proposed carbamate PTMs as a mechanism for regulating biological responses to carbon dioxide in 1983. However, the carbamate PTM is unstable outside the cell and its identification presents significant analytical challenges. Several stable carbamates have been identified in protein molecular structures, but the technical difficulties in their widespread identification has resulted in carbon dioxide-mediated carbamylation being all but forgotten as a PTM. For example, the Wikipedia page for PTM does not mention carbon dioxide-mediated carbamylation (not to be confused with the similarly named modification mediated by isocyanic acid) among 61 identified PTMs.

Direct protein targets for carbon dioxide sensing are almost completely unknown. We have developed technology to systematically identify carbon dioxide-binding proteins. We propose to understand the mechanism by which insect chemosensory receptors are able to sense and respond to carbon dioxide. The research programme will provide broad insight into direct molecular responses to carbon dioxide and supply tools that will revolutionise our understanding of carbon dioxide biology. The wrok will be perform in collaboration with colleagues at Warwick University.

The position offers an exciting opportunity to develop interdisciplinary skills in biosciences and the physical sciences in an entirely new area of biology.

The post is fixed term for 6 months and the successful candidate will be working with Prof Martin Cann (PI; Dept of Biosciences) at Durham University.

We’re looking for an experienced, creative researcher with a track record of supporting research-informed programmes of complex change to join CELCIS as our new Complex Change Research Fellow. As a leading improvement and innovation centre in Scotland, at CELCIS we work to improve the lives of children and young people in need of care and protection, and their families and carers. We do this by supporting people and organisations responsible for their care to make changes in services and in the practices and skills they use, all based on the needs, experiences and rights of children and young people.

This exciting, innovative new role brings together expertise in high-quality research and evaluation with complex change activities related to programmes that are aligned with the Whole Family Wellbeing Fund in Scotland. The Whole Family Wellbeing Funding (WFWF) is a ?500 million Scottish Government investment over the period of the current Scottish Parliamentary session (2022 to 2026) to support the whole system transformational change required to reduce the need for crisis intervention with children and their families and shift investment and support towards prevention and early intervention. This role will focus on supporting local and national partners to deliver on this ambition. Through the use of applied research and facilitation skills, your role will be pivotal in leading learning for practitioners and decision-makers to support change in complex systems, and informing decision making, adaptation and strategic planning.

The role will contribute to meeting the aspirations of The Promise of the Independent Care Review, incorporation of the UNCRC into Scots law, and the Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) approach.

Our Complex Change Research Fellow will need to take a flexible and responsive approach within a fast-paced environment where needs can change and develop rapidly, and have a strong understanding of what it takes to show progress in leading and managing complex change within public services. Do you have a track record of working with partners across the public and voluntary sector? Have you worked to embed data and evidence-based approaches and practices to help practitioners and services adapt and work with complex change? Are you able to communicate complex ideas to a variety of audiences and to write and review a range of research and evaluation outputs using different formats and channels to make an impact? If so, this could be the role for you.

This role would suit candidates who have a PhD in a relevant social science discipline or equivalent research experience in a professional context and who are able to lead programmes. Experience of working as a principal or co-investigator, applying for and manage funding grants, participating in and developing networks to foster research collaborations is essential to this role and candidates should be used to informing the development of research objectives.
