It was established in 1992 and is named after the philanthropist S?tk? Kocman, who made significant contributions to the university's development.

The university offers a wide array of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programmes across different disciplines through its different faculties such as the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Tourism.

Mu?la S?tk? Kocman University offers programmes in environmental sciences, tourism management, and engineering, which align with the unique geographical and economic characteristics of the Mu?la region.

It has several dedicated centres of research such as the Research and Application Centre for Mediterranean Civilizations, Research and Application Centre for Language Teaching, Research and Application Centre for Food Analysis, Research and Application Centre for Environmental Studies and many others.
