In 2006 Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) was created by the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong University – a top ten university in China. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS

The Department of Applied Linguistics is a research-intensive environment with two MA programmes, which also contributes a Linguistics pathway on four UG programmes. We have recently established a Language and Cognition Research Laboratory, for Psycholinguistic and Phonetic research, with eye tracking technology. The School of HSS also hosts the Health Humanities Research Group, part of the Research Center for Culture, Communication, and Society:

Linguistics at XJTLU is a rapidly expanding area. We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Associate/Senior Professor/Professor with excellent research, teaching, and supervision qualifications who will contribute to the department’s research profile. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

The appointee will be expected to contribute to the department’s research profile and should have an excellent track record of publication in their research area, appropriate to their stage of career. An ability and willingness to contribute to or lead collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects would be a strong advantage.

In terms of teaching, in addition to their specified area, the successful candidate must be able to contribute widely to the Undergraduate Programme, including in least two of the following: Introduction to Linguistics: Discourse, English as a Global Language, History of English, Language and Society, Semantics and Pragmatics, Language and Gender, Health Humanities, Intercultural Communication, or Language Documentation. A contribution to academic administration will also be expected.?

Staff typically teach 1-1.5module(s) per semester, depending on student numbers. The typical contact hours are around 6 hours per week.

About Us

The role is situated in the Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology at King's College London, part of the School of Life Course and Population Sciences within the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine. The department focuses on cohorts including TwinsUK to better understand the genetic and environmental factors influencing health and disease. Its extensive research portfolio covers genetics, epigenetics, and environmental impacts—such as lifestyle and diet—on complex conditions like chronic pain, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and osteoporosis. The department also delves into ageing and the microbiome role in health, contributing significantly to genetic epidemiology and public health. Strong collaborations within KCL and with national and international partners further amplify the department's research impact and reach.?

About the role

This post will work on the genetic epidemiology of back pain, intervertebral disc degeneration and hearing loss, supporting the research activities of Prof Frances Williams (PI, Dept of Twin Research, School of Life Course Sciences). We are increasingly moving to multi-omic analysis of microbiome and metabolites to understand their relationship with chronic complex traits. The use of two sample Mendelian randomisation is allowing us to truly define the risk factors which cause common complex conditions, and how they interact with host genetics.

There will have a unique opportunity to work on data from important cohorts including TwinsUK and UK Biobank.? The applicant should be familiar with all aspects of genetic epidemiology including heritability studies, GWAS and multi-omic modelling.

There will also be opportunities to engage in other projects using deeply phenotyped cohorts, as well as with other projects involving genomics research and age-related diseases, in particular chronic pain and age-related hearing loss.

Applicants are expected to be able to direct research independently, supervise students and have a good breadth of knowledge of genetic epidemiology and epidemiology research methods and background. This post is within a highly supportive environment for both early- and mid-career researchers and the ability to work as part of a team is essential.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 30/09/2026.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

* Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.

Your personal sphere of play:

We seek a highly motivated candidate to co-lead the further development of the transport model FLEXPART and its applications. FLEXPART is a community model, and our group is committed to its further development and making it more user-friendly. We also maintain and develop software to process meteorological input data to the model, as well as software for the analysis of model output. One example is the software FLEXINVERT, which is used for inverse modelling applications, e.g., to determine the sources of greenhouse gases. We are also seeking to establish new scientific application fields for FLEXPART, and the candidate will be free to choose future research directions of his/her own choice.

The successful candidate will be a creative scientist who enjoys both writing and documenting model source code, as well as seeking novel model applications. As a result of this work, peer-reviewed publications documenting the model and describing its applications are expected. The successful candidate will also support master students, doctoral students and Postdocs in the group, and will – to a limited extent – provide support to external users of FLEXPART.

The responsibility for the code development will be shared with another senior scientist, Marina Dütsch, and the development shall integrate the work of the whole group

The position will initially be limited to three years duration, after which it can become permanent by mutual agreement.

We seek a highly motivated candidate to pursue his/her doctoral thesis within the research fields covered by our research group. These could be, for instance, theoretical and numerical improvements of FLEXPART, development of new application fields for the model, or applications of the model in existing application fields such as transport of heat and/or water in the atmosphere during extreme meteorological events; climatological analyses of air/heat/water transport using an existing Lagrangian re-analysis; development of a new Lagrangian re-analysis based on the forthcoming ERA6 reanalysis; inverse modelling of greenhouse gases, radionuclides or air pollutants in the atmosphere. Duration and Requirements of the Fellowship

The duration of the Fellowship will normally be three years. The appointment will normally be made on an initial contract of 1 year, and further appointment for a period of 2 years is subject to the appointee’s satisfactory performance.

The appointees are required to submit applications for the RGC Junior Research Fellow Scheme (JRFS) or the JC STEM Early Career Research Fellowship for Translation and Application (JC STEM ECRF), and are encouraged to apply for other local / overseas grants or fellowship schemes.

Terms and Benefits

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointees.
