About the role?

The Department of Defence Studies seeks to recruit four Lecturers in Defence Studies on an Education & Research contract.? We welcome applications from a broad range of expertise within the field of Security Studies.? Any specific research focus may be considered, but preference will be given to candidates with subject matter expertise in the following areas: disruptive technology and AI; Russian strategy and doctrine; military operations and wargaming; nuclear strategy; applied military ethics.?

The successful applicant will be based in the Defence Studies Department at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom in Shrivenham and will undertake high-quality research and support a range of professional military and security education courses at the postgraduate level.? They will have a track-record of high-quality research and a commitment to undertake high-quality research in their subject area, publishing in recognised journals, with research mentorship offered in support of this activity.? The post-holder will further maintain research activities and connections through a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects and will work to secure external funding.

At the Defence Academy, successful candidates will teach and supervise students who are serving officers and civil servants in the UK and allied armed forces and partners. There are also opportunities to contribute to the School of Security Studies highly successful open online programmes, International Affairs and Global Security.? Successful candidates will support the planning, organisation and delivery of the Defence Studies Department, and, with departmental mentorship, eventually assume leadership and administrative responsibilities.? JOB PURPOSE:

The First Deputy Rector (Academic) is a senior member of the WIUT Executive, working with the Rector, and other members of the Executive, to lead and manage the University. He/She has strategic responsibility for the development and delivery of the academic portfolio of teaching and learning of the University and oversight of the academic management systems of the University in accordance with the quality and standards set by the University of Westminster (UoW) in London, UK.

The University was ?established in 2002 as the first international university in Uzbekistan and now has over 5500 students and 400 staff. The post is the Senior Academic Administratior and the postholder will work closely with and report directly to the Rector of WIUT, who is appointed on behalf of the Uzbek government.

The post is part of the Executive Team of WIUT which is the senior management team of the University. The post will also chair an Executive Team Forum of Senior managers reporting to the post.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The appointee will:


	Have at least 15 years of management experience in British Higher Education, including a track record of managing academic and administrative staff over this period;
	Be well versed in British Higher Education quality assurance procedures and culture with a commitment to? the maintenance of quality in teaching and research;
	Be a well qualified academic, with a higher degree, preferably a doctorate, and an academic track record in teaching and research, all within an English Medium Instruction Environment;
	Have a track record of leading and developing an Academic area of a British Higher Education institution with experience in developing, planning, implementing and evaluating academic quality and standards of programmes;
	Experience in strategic planning, assessment of programme effectiveness, and development of policies to enhance academic units within the University;

About us

The position is for a Laser & Research (R&D) engineer to commission a high repetition rate femtosecond Ytterbium laser amplifier prototype.

The R&D project is for 6 months, and it will be held in the attosecond quantum physics laboratory at King’s College London, in the NMES faculty at the Strand Campus (under the supervision of Dr Amelle Zair).

We are looking for hiring an excellent R&D laser engineer with a Master degree in Photonics with specific expertise on Fibre CPA laser technology. Candidates are expected to have a strong expertise in designing, developing and commissioning fibre femtosecond laser, in particular this expertise should include the development of a system and clear demonstration on delivering fibre femtosecond amplifiers.

The Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences (NMES) comprises Chemistry, Engineering, Informatics, Mathematics, and Physics – all departments highly rated in research activities and a wide-ranging portfolio of education programmes.

About the role

The R&D laser engineer will take the lead for the commissioning of our high repetition rate femtosecond Ytterbium laser amplifier prototype and embedding it into the existing CPA chain at King’s College London in the Attosecond quantum physics laboratory led by Dr Amelle Zair.

The R&D engineer is expected to build the amplifier, test and commission the full prototype, developing the design according to the proposed CDF design by Dr Amelle Zair.

He/She/ They will be in charge as well as of covering all necessary documentations and needed alignment procedure and measurements. These include, in addition to the commissioning, the storage of all data as per our DMP, industrial drawing such as CAD of the laser components, ray tracing and amplification simulations, documentations on alignment and performance of the system developed.

He/ She/ They will be fully responsible of the R&D work and reporting to the supervisor and collaborations on the progresses.

He/ She/ They will be given opportunities to disseminate the results with the supervisor to collaborators, potential IPRs, conferences if required and articles.

This is a full-time post (37 Hours per week) with a probation of 2 months. The position is?an onsite position. It cannot be undertaken remotely.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria


	A master in photonics that includes a clear femtosecond fibre laser expertise (master project)
	A strong expertise in R&D of fibre femtosecond laser technology and commissioning.
	Demonstrated expertise in CAD or industrial drawing and design.
	Demonstrated expertise in ray tracing (example: Zemax) or optical paths design.
	Excellent communication skills and reporting
	High level of commitment and working in a team


Desirable criteria


	Coding ability (labview, Maltab, Python or similar)
	Ability to produce, archive, organize and test data and documentations
	Being EDI aware
